Tewksbury Elementary School

Whittemore - Community, Culture & Conservation is excited to be partnering with the Tewksbury Elementary School and the Board of Education, in providing After-School programming for the 2021-22 Academic year, to be held on school grounds right after school.

Our programs will have a nature and wellness theme, enriching students on the importance of conservation, the natural beauty available in our own backyard (schoolyard), the importance of being outdoors, while embracing the community in which we live, all the while having fun! Our focus is for the children to be outdoors as much as possible while enjoying themselves and taking the skills learned and using them at home. We look forward to educating your students.

Imagining ourselves to be a family of Grey Timber Wolves, we will take a weekly walk patrolling and getting to know our"territory" (Pascale Park & the grounds of TES) - a hands on exploration of a range of natural history subjects; the basic geology, flora & fauna of the local landscape and wildlife, all the while discussing the basics of outdoor survival, all from the perspective of an extended wolf pack & pups!

This program will be held outdoors, weather permitting thru December. We ask that you dress you child for the weather. We suggest layers and sneakers or boots. If the weather does not allow to be outside, the program will be held indoors with fun activities relating to that days topic.

This class will be run by WhittemoreCCC's Naturalist David Tompkins. David has more then 20 years experience in wilderness education. At Whittemore David is our Naturalist, oversees the accuracy & educational aspect of our trails and has developed & teaches the school field trips for our local schools.

December 2, 9, 16

Grades K-5, Thursdays 3:35-4:35
with Yogi Carl Klemme

This program will be built upon practices and techniques from Yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Dance and Creative Play in Nature. Carl's intention for this nine week after school experience is to introduce participants to mindfulness through various types of movement, which will be presented in a playful and inquisitive manner.

As co-founder of PS.108 with his wife Erin Klemme, he has enjoyed bringing playful yoga every summer to the campers at Life Camp.  Since they opened Glow Yoga in Basking Ridge, he has been privileged to help facilitate programs & trainings focused on new and expectant Moms and their children. This program will draw on years of experience presenting meditation, mindfulness, focus and wonder through movement and attention to many.

Mindfulness: (Intentional Relaxed Receptivity)

For kids a capacity for mindfulness supports focus, clarity and creativity.

Yoga: (Meditation in Motion)

In this after school setting, yoga postures will enhance range of motion, balance, breath awareness and effectiveness.

QiGong: (Practices for Wholistic Wellbeing)

For children Qigong is fun flowing movements with whimsical names.

Tai Chi: (Slow Sublimated Movement)

We will weave together short sections of the Yang Style of Tai Chi for a fun experience of this popular practice. Also, more fun animal based terminology.

Dance: (Active Creative Movement)

Music is an effective tool for focus and centering. We will have fun with spontaneous free dance to a variety of musical styles.

Creative Play in Nature: (All of the Above Outdoors) We will experience some of the components of Forest Bathing as we look, listen, and feel the nature that is all around us.

This program will be held outdoors, weather permitting thru mid-November. We ask that you dress you child for the weather, gym clothes & sweatshirt. Once it gets too cold to be outdoors, class will be taught indoors.

Carl Klemme: Kripalu trained 500 hour professional yoga instructor. Wellness director of the Whittemore Center for Community, Culture and Conservation. Co-Owner of Glow Yoga in Basking Ridge and Co-Founder of PS.108, a 501-c3 not for profit yoga outreach organization and center in Bedminster.

Parents: Once your child is registered, please remember to select in Pick-Up Patrol, the day of the program (Tuesday or Thursday), the program they have registered for, either Pack Walk or Mindful Play. The teachers then will know to dismiss the child to the after school program they have selected. If you have any questions, regarding Pick-Up Patrol, please reach out to the school.
