Summer Garden Concert - Classical Flute & Clarinet

July 2017

What a wonderful evening - we started in the Gallery because of the rain but by

Act II -  the sun had come out and everyone decided - why not move to the Gardens? And so we did...the sun set in the background, the fireflies came out to dance and we enjoyed beautiful classical music by Kristen Wuest on Flute and Kevin Dayton on Clarinet. This beautiful evening was hosted by Metropolitan Seafood & Gourmet.

Summer Camp in July at Whittemore

July 2017

Our first 2 weeks of camp since our re-opening started off with fun had by all! The children each week enjoyed an assortment of outdoor activities from long & short walks on our trails, learning how to build a lean-to, surviving in the wilderness, and enjoying nature! This was supplemented by archery, bird house making and the kid favorite, frog-catching.  Each week they enjoyed guest appearances & presentations by our Whittemore environmentalist, cartographer, geo-cacher and our very own Todd Lambrix, Artist in Residence presenting a Felting demonstration.

We are happy to say camps were very successful and next year we will expand them to 4 week sessions. Thank you parents for sharing your children with us this summer, and thank you to Morris County Arts for providing our Camp program.

Community Day

June 2017

Whittemore was the place to be on a beautiful sunny day with so much to see and do! Artist in Residence Todd Lambrix debuted our new art studio featuring his renowned work with felt. Featured Gallery Artist, Beth O'Grady, facilitated two Public Works art pieces, "I Care About..." and a Sumi Ink Club Table. Gardening aficionados consulted with Lisa Tansug of Bird & Bough. Pop-Up Shops, Califon Bookshop - with its wonderful selection of books for adults and children and Toys With Love with its assortment of butterfly nets, bug catchers and nature related toys, were on hand. Children had lots of fun catching frogs and creating cards with our Art and Environmental docents, Ari & Emma. And Carolyn Thow was on hand to highlight all the enhancements to the house and gardens!  The event was hosted by BEX eatery + catering and Black River Roasters and our partners Northern NJ Beekeepers Association and Northern NJ Cachers.

Children's Garden Quilt Day

May 2017

For the last 14 years, while the snow is still on the ground, we begin thinking about the garden. Preschoolers from schools such as Tewksbury public preschool, Haytown, 1st Step and Bright Horizons are given trays, plugs and seeds provided by the Friends of Whittemore.  They begin growing these seedlings in their classroom, watering them and nurturing them until they bring them to Children's Garden Quilt Day in May.  The board and volunteers host a special day full of planting, pond exploration, watching bees pollinate, face painting, flower arrangements, and a nature hike.  But the good doesn't stop there.  Produce grown in the garden is donated to local food pantries such as the Good News House, Briteside, Open Arms, Anderson House and Clinton Food Bank.  Schools are also invited back in the fall for a harvest day to see how the garden produces. A grant from Garden Club of Somerset Hills continues to sponsor this event.

Opening Day - Community Garden Plots

May 2017

Opening Day was a success despite the rain! Gardening Season 2017 has begun. Gardeners joined us for breakfast and a presentation given by Lisa Tansug, proprietor of Bird & Bough, on Best Garden Practices and Organic Gardening. Then our Gardeners began to garden...

We are excited to watch the gardens flourish through the summer months and into the fall!
