About The Event
Oil Painting: Plein-Air
Learn to paint the landscape in the open air. Working with a limited palette of colors, participants will learn to create paintings that have extensive depth and dimension, along with a bold sense of energy and movement achieved through efficient brush strokes and confident color mixing. The gardens and landscape of Whittemore will be the inspiration for the artworks created in the course.

Materials List

Plein air easel of your choice -
I use a Coulter system or a pochade box, but you may choose whatever type of easel you feel most comfortable with.
- 8x10 canvas panels for plein air
- 1/4" , 1/2" and 1" soft synthetic angled flat brush for oil paints (not bristle)
- small fan brush, soft synthetic
- Disposable paper palettes, get the Greyscale brand by Richeson if available
- Turpenoid odorless mineral spirits in the blue and white can (NOT Turpenoid "natural")
- Small metal or glass containers with covers to hold Turpenoid
- Painting rags (old t-shirts or sheets cut into small strips or squares)
- Small flat box to carry your wet painting home in (a pizza box works well for this purpose)
- Bag for trash
- Oil paints (artist grade, not student paints) in the following colors:
- ​Burnt umber
- Prussian blue
- Ultramarine blue
- Alizarin crimson
- Cadmium red light
- Yellow ochre
- Cadmium yellow light
- Titanium white​
