About The Event
BYO, Chair and Picnic and make a night of it!
Emotionally provocative and layered in symphonic warmth, Dan Kassel's solo cello music brings this classical instrument to new heights. Using an acoustic cello, a Boss RC-50 looping station and minimal effects, Dan bridges the gaps between Klezmer and Irish folk, Indian classical and down-tempo electronic music, levity and suspense. His ability to use technology to loop and layer his instrument into expansive tapestries of sound is impressive, but the element that really stands out is the cello's deep and moving resonance. His work has been featured by WXPN, NJ.com and other independent blogs, and his piece, "Moonslice," won an Honorable Mention in 2014's International Songwriting Contest. With his third solo album complete, his sound is more rich and nuanced than ever, and he delights in sharing his soulful compositions with those looking for something fresh and meaningful
Dan has played the cello since the age of 9, and since beginning his journey of avant-cello in 2010, he has been fortunate to have offered his skills to a wide variety of clients. Private parties, fundraisers, hospitals, art openings, yoga sessions, private massage, modern dance, memorial services, fine restaurants, political rallies, churches and synagogues, weddings and wedding proposals, ticketed concerts and more make up Dan's vast repertoire, as well as teaching many students of diverse background and experience. Aside from his solo career, Dan has had the pleasure of joining some great musicians on stage. He served as cellist for the acclaimed Philadelphia String Quartet, shared the stage with members of Ween and Henry Rollins Band, has performed Indian Classical music with tabla accompaniment and electronica music with DJs and producers, and has recorded with many classical, folk and jazz artists.
Fully embracing the DIY approach in his career, Dan continues to accept new opportunities in performance and education through the rich network of connections made over years of playing in New York, Central Jersey and SE Pennsylvania. He has toured across the country and has traveled with his mini-cello, “Dauphine,” throughout SE Asia, India, Nepal, Mexico, and New Zealand. Dan's travels have been a driving source of inspiration, and the fusing of different world music traditions a long with an intuitive connection to his Ashkenazi roots has given birth to a complex style of playing that Dan is proud to call his own.
