About The Event
Join WhittemoreCCC and The Hunterdon Art Tour for our October Salon des Artistes
Guest Speaker: Val Sivilli
Topic: The Arc of an Artist's Life Around 2005, Val took a bit of a sabbatical from formally exhibiting her paintings to try to avoid a divorce, then regroup from a divorce and tend to the financial needs of her children by focusing on a side hustle Civilian, her handprinted clothing and design business. Then again in 2015, she ditched Civilian and went back to painting, writing and teaching. Now, she is rebranding Civilian, embracing the legacy of Civilian with her own long arc of making art. In this talk at Whittemore, Val will try to summarize, without being too densely delivered, this long life of an artist with the hope that redefining, reinventing and always tapping into the creative possibilities at various stages of our life is inspiring to all of us moving forward.
BIO: Brooklyn born, Long Island bred, Val has spent the better part of the last 30 years slinging her brash, bold, often difficult, mouthy self at Hunterdon County, NJ. A New Yorker at heart, she remains determined that her edge not be diminished by life in a rural environment. She has remained connected to a community of like-minded artists, kept a close eye on the issues of our planet as well as the political climate of our country never letting go of the distinct flavor of her family heritage. Val has exhibited widely throughout the United States and overseas and holds a MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers and a BFA from SUNY Alfred. She has held the following titles: Director to the original Steamroller Gallery in Frenchtown NJ; Adjunct Professor of Art throughout NJ, NY, PA; founding member of “THAT, The Hunterdon Art Tour”; Director of Art at Whittemore CCC and is currently an active member of the Steamroller Group, a local Artist Collective.
