I am moved by a combination of a long history of artists working with whatever materials are available to them and an Earth we all share that is in dire need of our stewardship. With our innate understanding that anything is a material if we are willing to see outside of convention, artists are in a uniquely qualified position to move their practices toward sustainability. In the past few years I have been experimenting with some of the discarded items that cause the greatest damage when left to pile high and blow in the wind. This piece is born of the second generation of discarded plastic reclamations, where I moved from creating utilitarian items out of waste plastic and into experimentation with plastic as fine art. While flowers are not usually my subject matter, I considered it an homage to Mother Nature and a great satisfaction to my impish leanings to flip the script of destroying nature to make plastic and instead, destroy plastic to make nature.
