Artist Statement:
Liz Mitchell’s artwork is multi layered both in content and construction. She uses materials and media that best illustrate the context and create the atmosphere of the story she is telling. From small handmade books to site specific installations each material used is carefully considered.
Along with a variety of materials she uses a wide range of processes to create the elements within each story. You can often find sewn horsehair, encaustic waxed surfaces, printmaking, ceramic forms, and a range of papers used to create her illusions. These elements are the building blocks of her stories that address themes found in religion, mythology, folklore, and fairy tales.
She works from her studio in Hunterdon County, NJ where the rural environment is a constant source of inspiration.
